What does Venice mean?
Veneto is a very prosperous region in Northeastern Italy.
Within this region are the historical cities of
Venice (Venezia),
Padua (Padova),Vicenza, Mantua (Mantova) and Verona.

The city of
Venice, which is actually a series of small islands
just off the Italian mainland, was once the capital city of the
powerful
Republic of Venice during medieval and early
modern times.
A beatiful view of a Venetian
canal. This view is would be
similar to the typical heart of
a medieval city.
Here is Venice's basilica and the
city's main square. The church is
dedicated to Saint Mark, and the
remains of this saint are said to be
kept in this church.
This column, topped by a statue
of the Lion of Saint Mark, the
symbol of the
Venetian
Republic
, is in the inland city of
Vicenza.
Here I am in Venice next to one
of the enormous bronze statues
dedicated to the Lion of Saint
Mark.
