| Modern Siracusa, ancient Syracuse, was once one of the greatest cities in the Mediterranean Sea. This city was the leading Greek colony in Sicily and remained the main urban center of Sicily until the Arab dominion, when Palermo supplanted it. There are many ancient Greek, Roman and other remains, including many early Christian catacombs. |

| In more recent times, Siracusa was famous for many miracles associated with an image of Mary that was miraculously weeping. Since then, an enormous sanctuary has been built in the city and it now houses this image of Mary. |
