Rhodes - Greece
Mark Merlino - Home page
Rhodes harbour, made famous for the
great Colossus of Rhodes which once
stood here. To this day, Rhodes remains a
bustling port and pleasant seaside resort.
On the Island of Rhodes there are significant
remains that date to the Classical Greek
period, including this theatre.
From late medieval times until the 1500s,
Rhodes was the main stronghold of the
crusading Knights of Saint John. The
walls which surround the old city were
very strongly built and remain an
impressive sight to behold.
This shrine, dedicated to Saint Nicholas is
typical of popular Orthodox devotion. Saint
Nicholas, who was from nearby Myra, is
one of the most popular saints in Greece.
