Perhaps the most interesting and perplexing archaeological remains in Malta are those of several different
Neolithic period temples. Some of these temples such as the Hagar Mnajdra Temple complex above may be as
much as 5000 years old. More plentiful and of significant historical interest are Malta's many churches. Most of
these are over 400 years old, though many contain relics, artwork, catacombs or grottos that are considerably
older than this.
The most significant historical event in Maltese history was the great Ottoman siege of the Malta in 1565. There
are several museums commemorating this event and the actual ramparts still stand. These photos are taken
from Birgu, the site of the decisive battle before the Ottoman retreat. The city was renamed Vittoriosa, the
Victorious, in honour of the victory, after the battle was won.
