The most interesting archaeological remains of the Roman period in Malta can be found in Rabat,
which was the main city in Roman times. In addition to several catacombs dating from this period,
a Roman villa, with statues and mosaics, among other discoveries, was found in Rabat.
Without a doubt, the most impressive historical sites date from the 16th century onwards, when the
Knights of Saint John called Malta home. They fortified Valletta and built many strongholds
throughout the island. Although Mdina's defences date from this period, the city, which was the old
capital city of the main island of Malta, was also well fortified in ancient and medieval times.
