| Considering the small size of Malta, the number of beautifully adorned churches, and amount of noteworthy sacred art is quite amazing. The above wall painting is found in a Marian Sanctuary in the town of Mellieha. Local tradition has it that Saint Luke painted this image when he was shipwrecked on Malta with Saint Paul. The above statue of Mary and Jesus is a modern example of Sacred art found in the town of Naxxar. |

| One of the most important churches in Malta is the Mosta Dome, which was built in the 19th century in the town of Mosta. This enormous church has the third largest dome of any church built in Europe. Only Haghia Sophia (once a church, then a mosque and now a museum) and Saint Peter's in Rome have larger domes. |
