Malta's Christian roots are very deep. Tradition has it that Saint Paul founded the church in Malta when he was
shipwrecked here on his journey to Italy. The above grotto is where he was said to have stayed in Malta during
that time. Outside of the ancient capital city of Mdina, you will find some early Christian catacombs. Within the city
walls, you will find the enormous and ancient Saint Paul's cathedral among many other smaller churches.
For centuries, Malta was home to the knights of Saint John. They embellished the island with over 300 churches,
such as the enormous Saint John's co-cathedral. Most Maltese are still very devout Catholics and this is visibly
manifested on the feast days of their local patron saints, when they have very devotional processions. You will
also find that many houses or even buses will have niches with crosses, images of saints, or prayers.
