| Most of the archaeological remains in Cappadocia date to the Middle Byzantine period. There are ferry chimneys, used as buildings. There are also numerous churches in the region and several underground cities. The modern center for tourism in Cappadocia is the city of Goreme. |

| The odd rock formations found in this region were formed over centuries by the erosion of volcanic sediment, which had been deposited in the region over the centuries. Cappadocia is still now ringed by numerous active volcanoes. |
